Navigating the Obituary Process: A Comprehensive Guide for Families
Losing a loved one is a profoundly difficult experience, and the process of honoring their memory through an obituary can feel overwhelming. However, with the right information and guidance, families can navigate this process with confidence and ensure that their loved one's legacy is appropriately celebrated. This comprehensive guide aims to provide a clear and detailed roadmap for placing an obituary, addressing the necessary information, policies, and procedures to ensure a seamless and meaningful publication.
Crafting a Lasting Tribute: The Obituary Essentials
Gathering the Necessary Information
When preparing an obituary, it's crucial to have the following details on hand:- Your full name, address, phone number, and an alternate contact number- The deceased's name- The obituary text, which should capture the essence of the individual's life and legacy- A high-quality JPEG or PDF photograph, if desired- The desired ad run dates, with the understanding that running the obituary for multiple days can result in a discounted rate
Verifying the Death
To ensure the accuracy and integrity of the obituary, the Pioneer Press requires verification of the death. This can be accomplished by providing the name and phone number of the funeral home or cremation society handling the arrangements. Alternatively, a death certificate can also be used for this purpose. It's important to allow sufficient time for the Pioneer Press to contact the funeral home or cremation society, especially during their limited weekend hours.
Navigating the Online Presence
All obituaries published in the Pioneer Press will also appear on TwinCities.com, accompanied by a permanent online guestbook. If the family wishes to have the online presence removed, they can contact the obituary desk to request this. Additionally, any changes to the online obituary can be handled through the obituary desk.
Understanding the Payment Process
Pre-payment is required for all obituary notices prior to publication, and the Pioneer Press accepts payment by credit card, electronic funds transfer (EFT), or cash. The minimum charge for an obituary is 2 for the first 10 lines, with an additional .20 per line thereafter. If the ad is under 10 lines, the minimum rate of 2 will apply. For a second run date, the lines are charged at .20 per line, starting with the first line. Additionally, each photo published is subject to a 5 per day charge.
Meeting the Deadlines
To ensure timely publication, it's crucial to adhere to the Pioneer Press's deadlines. For Monday through Friday, the deadline for obituary content, payment, and photo submission is 4:30 PM on the same day for next-day publication. On Saturdays, the deadline is 1:30 PM for Sunday publication, and on Sundays, the deadline is 2:30 PM for Monday publication. Any changes to the obituary must be made by the respective deadlines as well.
Exploring Memoriam Submissions
Unlike an obituary, a memoriam is a remembrance of a loved one who has passed. The rates and submission process for a memoriam differ from those for an obituary, and families are encouraged to contact the Pioneer Press for more information.By understanding these key elements of the obituary process, families can ensure that their loved one's memory is honored with the care and attention it deserves. The Pioneer Press team is available to provide further guidance and support throughout this meaningful journey.
